(25th April 2013) - The Japanese government will start in June to rebuild Juba Bridge at a cost of US$ 80 million.

The Japanese government’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will use stronger, more permanent materials that can sustain heavy traffic.

JICA chief representative in South Sudan Atsushi Hanatani says the bridge will be completed in 2016.

Hanatani said the reconstruction of Juba Bridge is one of three projects the Japanese government is to start this year.

“The second one is the expansion of the water supply system in Juba”

He said that with existing one, “the capacity is limited and there are a number of people buying raw water from the river Nile”.

He added that the third project is in the inland water transport sector.

“We are planning to expand and modernize the river port in Konyokonyo area of Juba.”

These three projects are going to start around the same time.
