Snapshot of Operations
UNMAS teams this month completed a non-technical survey of the Auxiliary South Sudan Police Service (SSPS) training area that is just outside Juba on the Juba-Yei road. The site has been handed over to the SSPS and UNMISS UNPOL and will be used for UNPOL training for the SSPS.
UNMAS's Implementing Partners continued operations arouns South Sudan. In Jonglei state, MECHEM performed road clearance and verification and in Eastern Equatoria, the agency performed verification and clearance. MECHEM also carried out Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) tasks in Bor. Within Bor locality, large areas previously contaminated by UXO have been cleared and released to the local population.
Another Implementing Partner, The Development Initiative (TDI), completed the clearance of all UXO stores and scrap from the Khor William site in Juba, destroyed a UXO found at Jebel Kajur near the UNHCR compound in Juba and safely detonated live items found in a scrap heap at the Nyolo Central Demolition Site. One team also performed Battle Area Clearance in Aweil on the terrain proposed for a new UNMISS compound, and another conducted non-technical survey of old Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) bases around Wau and other arms caches reported by local intelligence officers. Another TDI team was deployed on the Yei-Juba road in support of the Japanese Engineers road construction project. Two teams dealt with sub-munition strikes Maridi and Rokon and a fourth team performed survey and EOD tasks in Upper Nile State. Notable events from this month included assisting victims of a UXO accident in Rokon (please see earlier article), and identifying a second sub-munition strike zone, as well as two minefields, in the same area.
UNMAS's Implementing Partner MineTech International had four teams working in Central and Eastern Equatoria, one in Torit, one in Rokon, one in Tindalo and another in Minga. The team in Minga secured the help of an ex-SAF engineering officer with knowledge of the mines laid in the area, which is facilitating the work.
Implementing Partner G4S continued its operations in Aswa, Kapoeta and Maridi.
