SITUATION UPDATE
Humanitarian operations in Jonglei State continue to face significant challenges due to the on-going violence and insecurity across the state. Travel between Bor and Pibor has been suspended since 09 April attack on a UN convoy. There are on-going monitoring activities being undertaken by UNMISS/OCHA and updates will be circulated with Logistics Cluster partners when they are made available.
UNMISS provided a briefing to Logistics Cluster members at the Juba Coordination meeting on 28 May and advised that the current ‘hot spot’ areas in Jonglei include (but are not limited to): Manyabol, Pibor, Boma, Yuai, Duk, and Padiat.
In April, pipeline managers confirmed that pre-positioning activity is over 50% across the country. However, there were critical gaps in locations in Jonglei State due to inaccessibility on account of security and physical access constraints.
UNHAS was allocated a grant from the Central Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) for the deployment of two Mi8 helicopters. The two helicopters will be dedicated to the Jonglei response and will be utilized for medical evacuations, interagency assessments, and passenger and cargo movements. The prioritization and utilization of the helicopters will be determined by the humanitarian partners through the ISWG (Inter Sector Working Group) and OCHA with the Logistics Cluster managing the coordination in cooperation with the Health Cluster and UNHAS.
Initial reports of looting in Jonglei indicated that the humanitarian storage facilities, including Logistics Cluster inter-agency storage units, may have been affected in Pibor, Likongole, Boma, and Akobo. The Logistics Cluster will share details regarding remaining stocks once areas become accessible and information is available.
