1 . Humanitarian situation

  • The security situation remained precarious especially in the greater Upper Nile region with reports of increasing activity and fighting between the Rebel Militia Groups (RMG) of Yau Yau groups and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army of South Sudan. This resulted in 47 deaths, 42 of them rebel members and five (5) SPLA soldiers. The fighting took place in Kothchar village of Gumuruk Payam; Manyabol villages and Lekuangole Payam. The rebels looted several heads of cattle from Gumuruk and killed one traditional head Chief who was advising the Murle youth not to join Yau Yau forces.

  • Over 105,000 refugees continue receiving humanitarian assistance in Maban. More new arrivals have been registered in Jamam, the number however is reducing. The relocation of refugees from Jamam to Gendrassa camp was put on halt due to lack of space in Gendrassa. Talks between UNHCR and the community for more land is ongoing. Although floods have greatly reduced, heavy rains continue and communicable disease threats remain a concern due to the water and sanitation conditions in the camps.

  • Seasonal floods continue to affect over 260,000 people across the ten states of South Sudan. Humanitarian actors continue scaling up joint response efforts in the 43 affected counties. Jonglei state remained the most affected county with accessibility as a huge challenge making the delivery costs of health assistance difficult.
