(9th August, 2013) - Authorities in Twic East County, Jonglei state have confirmed that nine people were killed and seven others injured in an attack by armed gunmen.
The casualties are expected to be flown to Bor hospital by United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) helicopter on Saturday.
The authorities accused militia loyal to David Yau Yau of carrying out the attack on Alilei cattle camp in Maar Payam early on Friday where two of their members were reportedly killed after clashing with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA).
Radio Miraya confirmed that the SPLA and police are pursuing the suspects in the direction of Pibor County. There are reports of continuing gunfire.
Commissioner of Twic East County, Dau Akoi Jurkuc, said thousands of cows were also raided by the armed attackers.
“A very big attack was organized by David Yau Yau and the youth of Murle, they seized heads of cattle in the camp, killing 8 people and about 5 people with serious wounds,” he said.
“We identify the attackers, they are really from Pibor County, and one of them was killed.”
