Humanitarian situation and needs
Key messages
There are over 222 000 refugees living in South Sudan and in need of humanitarian assistance. Nearly 200 000 are from Sudan, fleeing the conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile.
At present basic services are available and running in all locations. Opening of new camps in Unity State continue to be a priority.
60 000 Southerners have returned so far from the North (Sudan) in 2013 and need to be integrated in the areas of return, whereas development initiatives are yet to fully materialise.
Inter-communal violence, natural disasters and fighting between the government and non-state actors continue to create huge humanitarian needs and displace thousands of people in particular in Jonglei State.
As of early September, 27 000 South Sudanese need assistance following flooding, most of them in Warrap State. The actual number of people in need could rise.
