International police officers serving at the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) are helping to consolidate the rule of law in the world's newest nation, says UNMISS Police Commissioner Fred Yiga.

Top cops from UN peacekeeping operations are in New York this week to review the growing importance of UN police (or "UNPOL") who number more than 13,000 worldwide.

Over the past two decades, the number of police officers serving in the field has risen significantly which reflects the role they play in achieving sustainable peace and security.

UN Radio's May Yaacoub and Mr. Yiga discuss what UNPOL are doing in South Sudan, and how a recently established library will promote "a culture of reading" among their local counterparts.
