Since fighting erupted in South Sudan in mid December, the Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that approximately 174,300 people have been displaced, with approximately 62,150 seeking refuge in UN compounds.
In total WFP has assisted approximately 73,900 displaced people as a result of the current crisis.
On 22 December, WFP began distributions to displaced people in the two UNMISS compounds in Juba and the UNMISS compound in Bentiu. First rounds of distribution were completed at two UNMISS compounds in Juba and at the UNMISS compound in Bentiu. Distributions at the UNMISS compound in Malakal have reached 22,800 people, with distributions expected to be finalized by 4 January.
Humanitarian access remains a key challenge for WFP’s operational response. Further, some looting of WFP food is anticipated as WFP continues to assess its 97 warehouse locations across South Sudan. WFP is working in coordination with OCHA to rapidly identify and target vulnerable groups, particularly those displaced by the conflict and in areas where food is no longer available.
