Uganda: 29,413 South Sudanese have fled to Uganda to escape fighting in their country

Kampala [ACTED News] – The escalating hostilities in South Sudan have led to an increase in the number of refugees entering Uganda, arriving through the Nimule and Koboko border crossings. A total of 29,413 South Sudanese refugees have arrived in Uganda since December 16th 2013 .

The situation at Dzaipi transit centre in Adjumani District remains dire with serious overcrowding and a critical lack of shelter, water and sanitation, and medical supplies. 19,758 refugees have arrived at this transit centre since the beginning of the crisis, with 3,494 refugees arriving on January 7th alone. The Ocea reception centre in Arua District has received 5,876 refugees to date.

Assessments are on-going to evaluate refugee needs in terms of health, water, hygiene and sanitation, protection and community services, environment, education and livelihoods.
