FOOD SECURITY
Somalia – Food Security
• Deterioration of food security and nutrition expected after poor Deyr rainy season. Early warning issued particularly for Hiraan, Middle and Lower Shabelle, where 550 000 people may be at risk.
• Flooding, conflict and displacement in Middle Shabelle will have further negative impact on food security and connected markets. (ECHO)
CONFLICT
South Sudan – Crisis
• South Sudanese refugee numbers in Uganda increasing rapidly; now reached 45 000. Up to another 50 000 expected to arrive in the coming months.
• 7 500 refugees in Kakuma Camp, northern Kenya.
• In Ethiopia, the number increased to 18 616. The majority of the refugees are arriving at Tirgol (Akobo) from Jonglei State.
• Over 12 000 crossed the border to Ethiopia over 11-12 January, in an attempt to benefit from the WFP food distribution; there is no clear intention of remaining in Ethiopia. (ECHO)
Central African Republic – Crisis
• Over half of the population in need of immediate aid. 886 000 IDPs, including 512 000 in the capital Bangui.
• The European Commission is the largest humanitarian donor to the country (EUR 39 million in 2013). (ECHO)
EPIDEMIC
Namibia – Cholera Outbreak
• 361 suspected cholera cases in Kunene since 16 November 2013; 11 deaths recorded;
The Ministry of Health and Social Services maintains the outbreak is managed and contained. (ECHO)
Ethiopia – Health
• Prevention and control measures are implemented by the Ministry of Health and partners to control outbreaks, including measles, dengue fever and polio. The latter rose to seven recorded cases countrywide

Nigeria – Insecurity Triggering
Population Displacement
• A car bomb explosion in the city of Maiduguri for which the Islamist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility killed at least 17 people. Following a four-year violence campaign, the states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa were declared in a State of Emergency in May 2013, since which time approx. 4 300 people have been killed.
• Continuing insecurity is causing population displacement within the country; IDP numbers now reaching 50 000, some of which cross the country borders. (ECHO)
TROPICAL CYCLONE
Mozambique Channel – DELIWE-14
• On 17 January, 06:00 UTC, DELIWE had max. sustained wind speed of 84km/h and its centre was located 140km west of the south-western coast of Madagascar. It was moving west-southwest and it was forecast to continue on this direction for the next 24h, maintaining its strength. Afterwards, it may turn north-west, towards Mozambique.
