(Jan. 21, 2014) More than 75 thousand displaced persons in Ugot Payam in Malakal County of Upper Nile State are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

The IDPs left their homes in Malakal town last week, fleeing fighting between government and anti-government forces.

Ugot Payam lies some 12 kilometers North East of Malakal town. Aban Yor Akol, the Coordinator of South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation in Makal County, says the number is huge and they need urgent humanitarian support.

Speaking to Miraya’s Gabriel Shadar, Yor appealed to international organizations to rescue the situation by air-dropping food assistance to the IDPs.

“There is nothing here for human beings to eat because the number of people here is huge, even finding a place to rest is difficult and people are in the open spaces and under trees. Many children are dying. What can we say is an appeal to organizations like WFP to drop food at least in the in the next forty-eight hours.”
