Highlights
· More than 80,000 people have now crossed the border from South Sudan into Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan. The number of new arrivals has stabilised in the past week, but further refugees are expected due to the fluid situation in South Sudan. The influx into Sudan has thus far been limited but there are indications that numbers may rise.
· WFP is prioritising the provision of critical food assistance to all new refugees, the majority of whom are women and children. Due to resource constraints in Uganda, rations are being cut by 50 percent for refugees who arrived before November 2013. Close coordination with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) ensures that assistance is timely and effective under difficult circumstances.
· WFP needs an additional US$35 million to cover requirements through March 2014, for operations supporting new South Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries.
