Over 646,400 people have been displaced inside South Sudan and another 123,400 people have fled to neighbouring countries since the beginning of the conflict in mid-December 2013. There are currently over 76,500 people sheltered in eight UN bases. The humanitarian community has reached 291,000 people with some assistance, the majority of whom are outside of UN bases in rural areas.
On 23 January, agreements on the cessation of hostilities and the release of the political detainees were signed between the Government of South Sudan and the Sudanese Peoples’ Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition. Following these agreements, the security situation in the country has calmed somewhat, though sporadic clashes were reported in rural areas of Jonglei, Lakes, Unity and Upper Nile States.
To date, 54,901 displaced children (6 months to 15 years) have been reached through integrated vaccination campaigns in IDP camps in Juba, Bentiu, Bor and Awerial.
After weeks of intense conflict and the evacuation of most humanitarian partners, UNICEF has moved to directly implement a vaccination campaign in Bor. UNICEF staff deployed to the UNMISS camp to deliver vaccines and train 10 teams of local vaccinators to immunize at least 4,000 children below 15 years against measles and polio in response to a measles outbreak.
