Highlights
From 29 January—1 February, WFP Assistant Executive Director Ramiro Lopes da Silva and Regional Director Valerie Guarnieri visited South Sudan. The high level mission reviewed progress of WFP and its partners in delivering food assistance, and included a visit to Malakal to assess the damage to WFP’s warehouse and office facilities. The mission also met with community leaders in the nearby village of Wau Shilluk where WFP delivered High Energy Biscuits for women and children that had been displaced to this area.
As of 6 February, WFP has scaled up to reach some 227,000 people displaced as a result of the crisis.
Humanitarian access and looting of stocks are key operational concerns. As of 6 February, WFP estimates that some 4,400 metric tons (mt) of food has been looted — enough to feed more than 265,000 people for a month. WFP continues to verify reports of looting and recover lost stocks where possible. Additional prepositioned food remain at high risk.
Since fighting erupted in South Sudan in mid December, the Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that approximately 743,400 people have been displaced, with approximately 85,200 seeking refuge in UN compounds.
