South Sudan: IDPs in Malakal’s UN compound call for adequate water distribution

Source: Miraya FM
Country: South Sudan

(March. 7, 2014) Internally Displaced People currently taking shelter at the United Nations base in Malakal have appealed for an improved water distribution service.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns that many IDPs are missing on the water distributed by some humanitarian agencies.
Isaac Paul, one of the Internally Displaced Persons in Malakal complained that he spends more time in the ques waiting to fetch water for his family.

IOM Wash Coordinator, Antonio Torres, said the organization plans to construct a larger water treatment plant and a distribution pipeline from the Nile River to the UNMISS Camp where IDPs have sought refuge.

“We are facing challenges for the distribution but we are working for the construction of a larger water treatment plant and a distribution pipeline from the river which is two kilometers from the log base, for the existing PoC and the new PoC which is under construction”.
UNMISS has been working with humanitarian partners to ensure the basic needs like food, shelter and water are provided to the IDPs
