South Sudan: Cholera fears as water situation in Juba worsens

(March. 14, 2014) Authorities in Central Equatoria have warned of a looming cholera outbreak if the water and sanitation facilities are not improved.

The fears were raised in a document presented to the council of ministers by the Manager of Associate Australian South Sudanese, Earnest Gublar.

Gublar told the State Council of Ministers meeting in Juba that the water sources need a total clean up and the sanitation facilities must be improved before the rains increase.

The Acting State Government Spokesperson David Lokonga Moses says the state council of ministers has resolved to raise money to upgrade the water and sanitation facilities in Juba town.

“The situation of water indeed in the recommendation has been a very serious issue that if something is not done outbreak of cholera may happen in Juba. A lot of issues have been put across this one that sanitation and water of Juba is very crucial.

"The Council has resolved to immediately look for resources and look for funding so that all the situation of water in Juba is taken of before the heavy rains could come.” David Lokonga Moses says
