(March. 17, 2014) The UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator, Toby Lanzer has appealed for reconciliation among communities as the only solution to the current crisis in South Sudan.
He was speaking to radio Miraya in Melut County of Upper Nile State, on a one-day official mission with representatives of humanitarian organizations.
Lanzer made the statement while describing the humanitarian situation in displaced persons camps.
"...there is not enough shelter, there is not enough food, there is not quite enough water, they are concerned about their future and we will be doing everything we can to step up the assistance that we can provide"
"... but what I have just explained to the community is that really this is not the solution, the solution is that the communities reconcile, there is one South Sudan people have to come together and they all need to reach out to each other." Toby Lanzer UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator continues.
Nyajok Chol , one of the IDPs in Dithoma I Camp in Melut, says camp conditions in are unbearable without access to clean water, food or shelter.
“We are exhausted we are staying without shelter, without clean water and without food. Our children are continuously suffering, they are without cloth no fire. We need sheets for shelter and cooking utensils.”
The number of internally displaced persons heading to Melut County has increased amid continuing insecurity in Makal, Manyo and Baliet counties in Upper Nile State and Pigi County in Jonglei State.
