On 11 March, in response to the request made by United Nations, Government of Japan officially decided to provide UNMISS with in-kind relief supplies.

The donation of 200 tents (4 m x 4 m) and 4,000 plastic sheets (5 m x 4 m) with volume of approximately 470,000 dollars are for the increased UNMISS contingents deployed to South Sudan and for huge number of affected people seeking refuge at the UNMISS compounds due to the significantly deteriorated security situation in South Sudan after mid-December 2013.

These materials arrived in Juba International Airport this afternoon and were delivered to UNMISS following a hand-over ceremony with the attendance of Japanese Ambassador Takeshi Akamatsu and Mr. Paul Egunsola, Chief of Staff of UNMISS.

Mr. Akamatsu stated “While Japan supports the efforts by the international community in bringing peace to South Sudan, we are providing these materials before the rainy season. We expect these tents and plastic sheets will be utilized effectively by newly arrived UNMISS contingents who will help in reaching out humanitarian assistance to those people in need and alleviate living environments of the people seeking shelter in UNMISS compounds.”
