Fighting was reported in two strategic areas in the area of Malakal, capital of the Upper Nile oil region. According to the local media, the clashes are underway in Kaka and Wodikona between rebels linked to former vice-president Riek Machar and government forces loyal to President Salva Kiir.

Constrasting versions are emerging from the sides. An army spokesman, Col. Philip Aguer, accused the rebels of attacking two SPLA posts in the early morning, forcing residents to flee.

The rebel spokesman, Lul Ruai, instead claimed that “already three weeks ago” Machar’s forces “repelled government troops and regained control of Kaka”, attributing today’s clashes to Kiir’s loyalists. He also said he could not confirm any fighting in Wodikona.
