Key Events

  • With the continued heavy influx, the expected number of South Sudanese refugees in Gambella region was increased to 200,000 people, up from 150,000 people last week.

  • The Government and humanitarian partners fear a spike in malnutrition in the country given the slow distribution rate of the first round of relief food assistance and the critical resource shortfalls for the targeted supplementary feeding (TSF) program. Last week, the Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Sector (DRMFSS) deployed a team to assess the food security situation in prioritized woredas in four regions. The assessment result will be shared with partners upon completion.

  • Ethiopia’s food price inflation rose to 6.1 per cent in March, up from 4.7 per cent in February. The food price inflation is driven by the price increases of bread and cereal.

  • With the on-going seasonal rains in Oromia and Somali regions, the national water trucking request decreased to 49 trucks, down from 51 trucks a week ago.

  • According to the education cluster, an estimated 30,000 – 40,000 refugee children in Gambella region require emergency education intervention.
