Humanitarian situation and needs
Key messages
• More than 187,000 refugees from Sudan are in South Sudan and in need of humanitarian assistance. The refugees fled the conflict in the Sudanese states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile;
• Hepatitis E outbreak continued to be reported in the refugee camps in Maban County, Upper Nile State, affecting more than 8,000 people;
• Inter-communal violence and other acts of violence and criminality continue to create huge humanitarian needs. Jonglei State is a particular hot spot: Over 23,000 conflict-affected people in Akobo County and 19,000 civilians affected by inter-communal violence and hostilities between the army and non-state armed actors in Pibor County received life-saving humanitarian needs;
• More than 400,000 Southerners who have so far returned from the North (Sudan) need to be integrated in the South Sudan – one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world;
• The working environment for aid organisations is increasingly difficult and humanitarian access has deteriorated since 2012.
