45 fistula patients are being operated in Wau town, Western Bahr el Ghazal State.
The fistula treatment has been organized by the State Ministry of Health, United Nations Population Fund and the American Medical Resource Foundation.
Addressing people during the launch of the fistula operation, the advisor for Essential Service in the state, Livio Gelego Bahara, urged women living with fistula to come for the treatment.
Fistula is caused during labor contractions, when the baby's head is constantly pushing against the mother's pelvic bone which creates a hole causing tissue to die due to lack of blood flow to the area.
A woman with fistula is likely to be rejected by her husband and the community because of her inability to bear more children and potential odour.
