South Sudan Emergency preparedness and Humanitarian Action (EHA) - Week 43 (22nd - 28th Oct) 2012

Highlights

During this week, WHO;

  1. Finalized the development of the CAP-2013 process for the health cluster.

  2. Coordinated the Medical Evacuation of four patients from Pibor County to Bor and Juba Teaching Hospitals.

  3. Supported the State Ministry of Health (SMOH) Unity to conduct an Influenza (H1N1 and H5N1) refresher training in Bentiu, Unity state.

  4. Supported the ongoing countrywide Malaria response by supporting MSF family with 25,000 Rapid Diagnostic Tests to enhance case management in Lakes and Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

  5. Filled in critical gaps by backstopping health partners (IMC and MSF) with kalazar drugs to improve case management.

1 . Humanitarian situation

  • The overall security situation in the country remained tense this week. Reports of continued clashes between the Rebel Militia Groups (RMGs) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) were reported in Jonglei state. Three casualties, two of them critically injured were evacuated to Bor hospital for specialized attention.

  • The Refugee response remains the biggest humanitarian emergency in South Sudan to date. New arrivals were registered this week in both Jamam and Doro camps. There is information of huge numbers of people crossing into the area in the next few weeks. The government has asked all humanitarian agencies and NGOs to make contingence plans in preparation of the influx of refugees. The relocation of refugees from Jamam to Gendrassa is also still on halt until issues of acquiring more space are resolved with the host community.

  • Tension between Sudan and South Sudan has reduced, as a result the Africa Inland Church flights to Juba are expected to resume operations this week. International Organization for Immigration (IOM) and UNHCR are scheduled to resume transportation of more stranded returnees from Khartoum to South Sudan. In this reporting week, 981 returnees were tracked down heading to their final destination in South Sudan. An estimated 14,000 are reportedly stranded in Renk awaiting onward transportation assistance.
